The mandible (lower bone) may be broken in one or more places. The victim will complain of pain, swelling, inability to close his mouth, teeth that do not fit properly, possibly missing or broken teeth, and difficulty speaking. There may be bleeding from the mouth if the fracture extends into the oral cavity. To provide support, a bandage is wrapped around the top of the head and under the jaw. If the victim needs to vomit, it should be easily removable. A liquid diet should be followed until the victim can be taken to the hospital. Allow a person to sit if he has a significant facial injury, especially if there is bleeding or vomiting so that he can lean forward and drain these fluids without choking. Don't put him on his back if he needs to be recumbent. Put him in the recovery position instead.
